It’s that time of year… the temperatures are slowly rising, birds are singing, and baseball’s spring training has hit the valley. Now is the time that the majority of our customers begin their “Spring Cleaning”.
Two years ago, I wrote a post on our website offering some Spring Cleaning Tips. This year I feel the need to mention what I would consider the #1 mistake that some of our customers make before their scheduled window cleaning appointment.
Here is the mistake:
In order to “help” the window cleaners with their dirty windows, some customers chose to spray down their house and windows the day, week or month before their appointment. In theory, this is a nice idea. Surely spraying down dirty, dusty, cobwebbed-filled windows with water from their garden hose will help clear off the glass and make the job of window cleaning a breeze, right?
Wrong. Not in Arizona. Unfortunately, most of us in Arizona have severe hard-water. Let me explain:
Our water is full of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, metal cations and compounds such as sulfates and bicarbonates. When hard water touches the glass, it can form water spots that can be very difficult to remove. This can happen over night! If not removed quickly, these water spots can cause irreparable damage to the windows. This is because glass is porous and allows corrosion to occur.
Can hard-water spots be removed? Usually. There are 3 different stages of hard-water stains. In “stage 1”, the hard water can usually be treated with a chemical and some elbow grease. In “stage 2”, the hard water can be removed by grinding and polishing the glass. In “stage 3”, the window would need to be replaced.
If you want to have your home sprayed down to wash off the dirt, dust and cobwebs, timing is everything. At Olsen Brothers Window Cleaning, we offer to spray your home down (the same day as the appointment), and then clean the windows before the hard-water sets in.
So, the next time you feel the urge to spray down your windows, just remember to clean them immediately… or better yet… just call Olsen Brothers Window Cleaning, sit back and relax.
